The long awaited “improved” Form I-9 (03/08/13 N) has been released and is now available for use. A 60 day grace period ending May 7, 2013 has been provided for employers that need more time to make updates to their processes and procedures.
The new form has expanded to two pages which should assist with minimizing errors and missed fields. Changes from the old version also include:
- Adding data fields, including the employee’s foreign passport information (if applicable) and telephone and email addresses;
- A field has been added for the employees name on the top of page two and must be completed by the employer;
- Improving the form’s instructions for both the employee and employer, and
- Revising the layout of the form.
USCIS noted that employers do not need to complete new Form I-9s for current employees for whom there is already a properly completed Form I-9 on file. Please click here for a link to the new form.
