The holidays are upon us and schools will soon be closed for the break. Nearly every year, a client sets the thermostat too low when school is not in session, resulting in frozen pipes and water damage claims.
Did you know that every insurance policy requires the property owner to maintain appropriate heat and utilities all year long? Otherwise, the insurance carrier may not pay claims related to freezing. These types of claims are costly and will negatively impact your budget if you are forced to make repairs on your own.
DON’T BE THAT SCHOOL!
- Set thermostats and heating equipment so pipes don’t freeze.
- Inspect and confirm the building does not have any drafts or cold air leaks.
- Consider hiring a plumber to shut off the main water supply and drain the water pipes, but DO NOT shut off fire sprinklers.
